Rationalization as a Psychological Defense Mechanism

Rationalization offers reasonable-sounding explanations that protect us from shame, guilt, uncertainty, or a threatened self-image. These explanations may contain truth, yet still become barriers when they exclude uncomfortable evidence and replace responsibility, learning, or repair.
