Understanding Cognitive Psychology

The study of cognitive psychology involves a deep exploration of the human mind and its intricate functions. It delves into various aspects such as learning, memory, attention, perception, reasoning, language, and decision making. The foundational concept of cognitive psychology is the relation between external environments and internal psychological processes involved in processing those environments. We absorb stimuli through our senses, perform functions to process the information, and create a coherent interpretation from the information. The cognitive processes involved in this process include attention, perception, learning, memory, language, concept formation, problem solving, and thinking.

By examining internal mental processes like problem solving, decision making, and language production, cognitive psychology provides valuable insights into how individuals perceive, remember, think, speak, and solve problems. This field plays a pivotal role in unveiling the complexities of the human mind and contributes significantly to our understanding of human behavior and cognitive processes.

Cognitive psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on the study of mental processes such as “attention, language use, perception, problem-solving, memory, and thinking.” It explores internal mental processes and how people understand, diagnose, and solve problems, as well as how they learn, remember, and forget information.

Basic Divisions in Psychology

Cognition is considered one of three basic divisions in early psychology. The three basic divisions are cognition, emotion, and motivation (Eysenck, 1993). Cognitive psychology focuses on cognitive processes and not emotions or underlying motivations. However, cognitive psychology does not ignore or deny the intricate interwoven processes involving feeling affect and cognitions. Cognitive psychology does limit the inclusion of individual differences in their research. Research of personalities, dispositions, and vulnerabilities is covered in a different field of psychology.

Cognitive psychology emerged as a distinct branch of psychology in the mid-20th century, influenced by advances in fields such as Gestalt psychology, developmental psychology, comparative psychology, and computer science. Cognition vs. Emotion

Emotions push action in many ways. Strong emotions may commandeer control over behavior, reacting through learned responses, temporarily suspending cognitions. Our cognitions likely will kick in later, after the dust settles, describing and narrating the event for long-term storage and later recall to interpret new threats and opportunities. Basically, life stress impairs cognition.

Diana Fosha explains that “cognition, in contrast, has a much more in-control quality that permits us to retain more of a sense of ourselves as initiators or executors” (Fosha, 2000).

Cognition is often referred to as top-down processing. In contrast, we refer to emotions in psychology as bottom-up processing. Except in extremely heightened emotional states of dysregulation, emotions and cognitions work together. An external stimulus will arouse our system, creating an affective feeling. When arousal is sufficient enough, it sparks processes of cognition to explain the arousal and label the feeling. Wilhelm Hofmann and his colleagues wrote, “Once in the focus of executive attention, immediate affective reactions may develop into more full-blown emotions because they are endowed with a richer set of cognitions generated by attribution and appraisal processes.” They continue explaining that “these accompanying cognitions in working memory may help to shape, sustain, or even amplify the emotional experience at hand” (Hofmann et al., 2011).

Cognitive Functions, Emotions and Synchrony

A simplistic view is that emotion and cognitions are in constant battle for supremacy. This is incorrect. Robert Sapolsky, a professor of biology, neurology, neurological sciences, and neurosurgery at Stanford University, explains that “while emotion and cognition can be somewhat separable, theyโ€™re rarely in opposition. Instead they are intertwined in a collaborative relationship needed for normal function, and as tasks with both emotive and cognitive components become more difficult (making an increasingly complex economic decision in a setting that is increasingly unfair), activity in the two structures becomes more synchronized” (Sapolsky, 2018).

Cognitive psychology is built on the concept of information processing. Basically, the science is the study of how we process the rich information flowing from our environments. The organism must perceive, adapt, and appropriately react to environments in order to survive and flourish. Top-down processes, guided by past experience and expectations, along with bottom-up reactions impact cognitions.

Attention

For example, in a crowded room, we immediately focus attention on a conversation where we over hear someone say our name. Our name tags the conversation on the other side of the room as important.

Attention performs a key process of sorting relevant and irrelevant information. Some theorists suggest there is a bottleneck in the processing of external stimuli. Because working memory is limited in space, the stimuli is graded on level of importance. However, there is disagreements over exactly where in the perception, attention, cognitive processing continuum this bottleneck occurs (Eysenck, 1993). Perhaps, we record a lot more in memory than what actually punctures conscious attention.

Sustained attention refers to the cognitive process of concentration. This may be deep contemplations, mediation of a particular subject, or any practice that sustains attention to one (or a small set) of particular subjects.

Language

Cognitive psychologists investigate language comprehension, production, and acquisition. They study how individuals understand and generate language, the mental processes involved in reading, writing, and speaking. Cognitive psychology also examines how language shapes thinking.

We also use language to organize grouping of stimuli into a coherent story. We then can evaluate our subjective story for reliability. Our narrative constructions, of course, often support our beliefs rather than reality.

Current theories in emotion suggest that we experience a more colorful emotional life when we have a more robust vocabulary to describe our feeling affects.

Cognitive psychology delves into how individuals approach and solve problems. It examines factors influencing problem-solving strategies, and decision making.

Problem Solving

The goal of cognitive research is to identify which processes and strategies lead to successful problem-solving performance.

Cognitive psychologists suggests that cognitive problem solving occurs when:

  • The individual is goal directed, in some sense of attempting to reach a desired end state.
  • Reaching the goal or solution requires a sequence of mental processes rather than a simply a single mental process.
  • The mental processes involved in the task should be cognitive rather than automatic (Eysenck, 1993).

Decision Making

A significant function of thinking is making a decision about the best choice from a set of alternatives. Eysenck explains that “decision making in most situations involves considering the values of the possible outcomes of different choices and of the probabilities of those outcomes occurring” (Eysenck, 1993).

Mixed in with decision making is prediction and bias. Several cognitive functions intermingle in the complex processes of decision, including the involvement of emotion, motivating action in one direction or the other.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Naturally, cognitive therapy is built on the foundational concepts of cognitive psychology. Aaron Beck was an early proponent and developer of the cognitive therapy style.
