Imagine an animal that was born a raccoon but has been shaved, dyed, given a white stripe, and altered so that it smells like a skunk. What kind of animal is it now? Many people feel that the changes affect how it looks without changing what it really is. Now consider a different claim: a person’s behavior has a genetic association. Does that make the behavior permanent or inevitable? Again, the mind is tempted to look beneath appearances for something deeper and more decisive.
Psychological essentialism is the tendency to treat some categories as if their members share an underlying reality that makes them what they are. The proposed essence may never be seen or clearly identified. Even so, it is expected to explain identity, visible characteristics, hidden properties, and what a category member will become (Medin & Ortony, 1989; Gelman, 2003).
This way of thinking is neither simply foolish nor consistently accurate. Categories allow us to learn from limited information. Yet they can also make a flexible and varied world appear divided into fixed kinds. The central problem is not that we classify things. It is that a useful category can begin to feel like a hidden destiny.

What Is Psychological Essentialism?
A Psychological Claim Rather Than a Metaphysical One
Douglas Medin and Andrew Ortony introduced psychological essentialism as a claim about human cognition. They were not arguing that every familiar category truly possesses an essence. They proposed that people often reason as if an unseen property or causal structure determines what something really is (Medin & Ortony, 1989).
The distinction matters. A belief can organize perception and judgment even when it offers a scientifically inaccurate account of the world. Social groups, for example, do not have the sharp natural boundaries, internal uniformity, or single determining causes that essentialist intuitions may imply. Studying essentialism therefore means examining the structure people attribute to categories, not confirming that the structure exists (Rhodes & Mandalaywala, 2017).
The Essence Placeholder: A Hidden Cause Without a Name
Medin and Ortony called the mind’s reserved place for an unknown defining property an essence placeholder. A person may fill it with DNA, blood, ancestry, internal organs, temperament, or a soul. They may also have no clear proposal at all. The important feature is the expectation that some deeper fact exists and that experts could, in principle, discover it (Medin & Ortony, 1989).
Susan Gelman developed this idea in her account of childhood essentialism. A child can believe that boys and girls, or two animal species, differ in a deep way without being able to say what that difference is. Knowledge may change while the placeholder remains. What begins as an undefined ‘something inside’ may later be redescribed in biological, genetic, psychological, or cultural language (Gelman, 2003).
A Family of Related Beliefs
Essentialism is not a single switch that is either on or off. It can include beliefs that category boundaries are objective and discrete, that members are fundamentally alike, that membership remains stable, and that an internal cause produces category-typical properties. These components are related, but research does not show that they always rise and fall together (Haslam et al., 2000; Rhodes & Mandalaywala, 2017; Rhodes & Moty, 2020).
Someone might view a category as highly informative without believing that membership is permanent. Another person might see membership as inherited while still recognizing substantial variation among members. Treating essentialism as a bundle of intuitions makes these combinations visible and guards against oversimplifying the theory itself.
How Researchers Study Essentialist Beliefs
Researchers do not measure essentialist thinking with a single test. Instead, they approach it from several angles. They ask whether an animal remains the same kind after its appearance changes, whether a category helps people predict an unseen property, and whether group boundaries are viewed as natural, permanent, or sharply divided (Keil, 1989; Gelman, 2003; Haslam et al., 2000; Rhodes & Moty, 2020).
These methods capture related but separable expectations. Evidence that someone treats a category as informative does not establish that they also see it as biologically inherited or impossible to change. Results therefore need to be interpreted by component, category, task, and social context.
What Essentialism Is Not
Essentialism is not the same as categorization, stereotype knowledge, or any biological explanation. Categorization sorts information. A stereotype attributes characteristics to a group. An entity theory concerns whether an individual attribute, such as intelligence or personality, is fixed or malleable. Essentialism makes the broader claim that a category or kind has a deep structure that explains its members (Hong et al., 1999; Bastian & Haslam, 2006).
The constructs can reinforce one another without becoming interchangeable. Believing that traits are fixed may make essentialist explanations more attractive, and essentialist beliefs may make stereotypes seem natural or inevitable. Yet people can know a stereotype without endorsing it, accept biological influence without assuming destiny, and use a category without treating it as a hidden essence.
Why Categories Seem to Have a Hidden Essence
Inductive Potential
A category has inductive potential when knowing that something belongs to it supports predictions about properties we cannot yet observe. If one bird has a particular internal structure, we may expect another bird of the same kind to have it too. Category labels therefore do more than name visible similarities. They help us extend knowledge from familiar examples to unfamiliar ones (Gelman, 2003).
This capacity is efficient. We could not investigate every new animal, plant, person, or object from the beginning. The same efficiency creates a risk: one observed feature may be projected too confidently across a varied category. The psychological advantage and the potential error come from the same act of generalization.
Deep Causes and Surface Similarities
Essentialist reasoning treats visible properties as effects of a deeper cause. Medin and Ortony summarized the reversal with twins: twins are not twins because they are similar; they are similar because they are twins. Their shared origin is taken to explain the resemblance (Medin & Ortony, 1989).
Appearances still matter, but they are treated as clues rather than final definitions. A whale may resemble a fish while being classified with mammals because anatomy, development, and ancestry outweigh the surface match. Essentialism begins when the mind expects this deeper organization even before it knows which evidence should count.
Andrei Cimpian and Erika Salomon propose an inherence heuristic as one possible precursor to this expectation. When people encounter a recurring pattern, they may default to explaining it through the inherent characteristics of the people or things involved while overlooking historical, conventional, or situational causes. A social arrangement can then feel like the natural expression of what its members are. The inherence heuristic is a proposed route toward essentialist beliefs, not another name for essentialism itself (Cimpian & Salomon, 2014).
Natural Kinds and Human-Made Artifacts
People commonly reason differently about natural kinds and artifacts. Animals and plants are often understood through origin, internal structure, and inherited development. Tools and furniture are more often understood through intended function and human use. A damaged chair may remain a chair because of what it was designed to do, while changing an animal’s appearance may not seem to change its species (Keil, 1989; Gelman, 2003).
Frank Keil’s transformation studies made this contrast vivid. Children heard stories in which an animal underwent extensive changes. In one version, a raccoon was shaved and dyed, given a skunk-like stripe, and surgically altered to produce a skunk-like smell. Younger children were more influenced by appearance, whereas older children increasingly judged that the animal remained a raccoon. Transformations of an artifact’s function were more likely to change what kind of artifact children thought it was (Keil, 1989).
These findings reveal developing intuitions, not proof that biological species contain timeless inner substances. Species vary internally, change across generations, and do not always have perfectly sharp boundaries. Folk essentialism and contemporary biological explanation should not be treated as the same thing (Gelman, 2003).
How Essentialist Thinking Develops
Children Reason Beyond What They Can See
Children do not need a mature theory of genetics to reason beyond appearances. From the preschool years, they may use origins, internal parts, characteristic functions, causal relations, and testimony from adults to decide what something is. These capacities can support essentialist conclusions, but recent developmental accounts emphasize that children are not born with a complete social-essentialist theory. They assemble beliefs while trying to make sense of the patterns and explanations available to them (Gelman, 2003; Rhodes & Moty, 2020).
Development is therefore neither a blank-slate story nor a fixed blueprint. General cognitive expectations can make some explanations easy to learn. Language, institutions, social practices, and direct experience influence which categories are treated as meaningful and what sort of meaning they acquire (Rhodes & Moty, 2020; Pauker et al., 2020).
Generic Language Can Make a Group Feel Like a Kind
Generic statements describe a category as a whole: ‘tigers are fierce,’ ‘girls like pink,’ or ‘those people are good at math.’ A generic does not specify how many members fit the description. Instead, it can imply that the property is characteristic of the kind and that category membership helps explain why a member has it.
In experiments by Marjorie Rhodes, Sarah-Jane Leslie, and Christina Tworek, adults and four-year-old children heard statements about a novel, visibly diverse social group called Zarpies. Generic descriptions produced more essentialist responses than specific statements about individual Zarpies. In a third study, parents induced to think of Zarpies essentialistically produced more generic language when talking with their children. The studies demonstrate a plausible feedback loop: essentialist beliefs encourage generic speech, and generic speech can encourage essentialist beliefs (Rhodes et al., 2012).
Culture and Context Shape Which Categories Become Essential
Children do not essentialize every social category equally. Gender has often elicited earlier and more consistent essentialist responses than race in some United States samples, while beliefs about race, ethnicity, class, religion, language, and occupation vary across communities and tasks. A child’s own group membership, the salience of local divisions, cultural norms, linguistic marking, and exposure to diversity can all affect how a category is understood (Rhodes & Mandalaywala, 2017; Pauker et al., 2020).
This variability is theoretically important. If the same category can feel natural in one setting and more conventional in another, essentialism cannot be explained only as the discovery of an objective boundary. Social environments help teach people which distinctions supposedly reveal deep kinds of persons.
Social Essentialism and the Idea of Natural Kinds
Natural Kind Beliefs
Nick Haslam, Louis Rothschild, and Donald Ernst asked people to rate forty social categories. Some categories were seen as more like natural kinds: rooted in nature, stable across history, separated by firmer boundaries, and difficult for a person to leave or change. In everyday thought, these categories can feel discovered rather than created by people (Haslam et al., 2000).
When a Group Feels Like a Coherent Whole
The second dimension was entitativity: the degree to which a group is perceived as a coherent whole. People who see a group this way are more likely to assume that its members are alike, that membership reveals a great deal about a person, that group-linked traits come from within, and that the boundary permits little overlap with other groups. A group can therefore seem tightly unified even when it is not viewed as biologically natural (Haslam et al., 2000).
The distinction helps explain why essentialism is not a single moral or cognitive pattern. Naturalness, permanence, uniformity, and informativeness can combine in different ways. A social category may be treated as historically stable but internally diverse, or as highly cohesive but socially constructed.
Essentialism and Prejudice: Related but Not Identical
Essentialist beliefs can intensify stereotypes by making differences seem deeper, group boundaries seem sharper, and one member appear representative of all the others. They may also make existing social arrangements seem inevitable. Yet essentialism is not uniformly associated with prejudice, and its components can predict different judgments (Haslam et al., 2000; Rhodes & Mandalaywala, 2017).
Brock Bastian and Nick Haslam found that beliefs in the biological basis, discreteness, and informativeness of human attributes were associated with greater stereotype endorsement and more innate or inherent explanations of stereotypes. Their findings were correlational, and the authors cautioned that essentialism does not have a simple relationship with negative prejudice. The study nevertheless shows why fixedness alone cannot represent the entire essentialist pattern (Bastian & Haslam, 2006).
This qualification does not minimize the harm of rigid social classification. It improves the explanation. Prejudice depends on evaluation, status, history, threat, norms, and power as well as categorization. Essentialism can provide a structure in which a stereotype feels natural or self-explanatory, but it does not supply every part of prejudice (Link & Phelan, 2001; Rhodes & Mandalaywala, 2017).
Genetic Essentialism and the Pull of Genetic Destiny
From Genetic Influence to Genetic Destiny
Genetic language can make the imagined essence sound scientifically settled. Ilan Dar-Nimrod and Steven Heine use the term genetic essentialism for the tendency to hear ‘genetic’ and infer much more than the evidence shows: that a characteristic cannot change, has one decisive cause, and divides people into naturally different kinds. Genetics may matter greatly without supporting any of those conclusions (Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011).
Some single-gene disorders do follow a comparatively direct genetic pathway. Most complex human outcomes do not. Behavior, personality, health, and ability commonly reflect many genes working through development and in continuing interaction with the environment. A genetic contribution is therefore not a complete causal script (Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011).
Heritable Does Not Mean Unchangeable
Heritability describes variation within a population under particular conditions. It does not tell us that a trait cannot change, that the environment is unimportant, or that every individual follows the group pattern. Even highly heritable characteristics can respond to nutrition, education, treatment, social opportunity, or other environmental changes (Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011).
The mistake is psychologically understandable. Genes are internal, invisible, inherited, and causally important, which are precisely the features people expect an essence to possess. Genetic language can therefore make a probabilistic influence sound like an inherent nature (Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011).
Fatalism, Blame, and Mixed Consequences
Genetic explanations can increase pessimism about change, sharpen perceived group differences, and encourage people to treat a characteristic as permanent. In some contexts, however, they can reduce blame by making an outcome appear less voluntary. Reduced blame does not necessarily eliminate stigma; sympathy and social distance can coexist (Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011).
A meta-analysis of 28 experimental studies found this mixed pattern in explanations of psychological problems. Biogenetic explanations reduced blame but increased pessimism about recovery. They also increased perceived dangerousness, although that estimate may have been affected by publication bias, and they did not typically change desired social distance. Biological explanations can therefore alter different parts of stigma in different directions (Kvaale et al., 2013).
This mixed pattern is another reason to resist simple formulas. A biological account is not automatically humane or dehumanizing. Its effect depends on whether listeners infer inevitability, dangerousness, sameness, diminished responsibility, or the possibility of effective support.
How Essentialist Thinking Shapes Judgment
From Useful Induction to Overgeneralization
The practical strength of essentialism is also its weakness. Once a category seems to have a deep nature, a property observed in one member becomes easier to project to others. This can support learning about genuinely structured biological relationships. In social life, it can turn a limited observation into a claim about what an entire kind of person is like (Gelman, 2003; Bastian & Haslam, 2006).
The problem is not merely factual error. Essentialist explanations redirect attention. Instead of asking which circumstances, opportunities, histories, or relationships produced a difference, the mind can treat the category label itself as the cause (Cimpian & Salomon, 2014).
Three interpretive shifts can follow. Variation within a category becomes less visible. Overlap between categories also recedes from view. Finally, the label itself begins to feel explanatory: a person behaves that way because they belong to the group. Yet repeating a classification does not identify the mechanism that produced the behavior (Haslam et al., 2000; Cimpian & Salomon, 2014).
This is one place where social categorization can harden into categorical thinking. Categories remain useful summaries, but they lose accuracy when averages are treated as properties of every member or when a social boundary is treated as a natural wall (Haslam et al., 2000; Bastian & Haslam, 2006).
When a Diagnostic Label Starts Explaining the Person
A psychological or psychiatric diagnosis can name a recurring pattern, guide treatment, legitimize distress, and connect a person with support. Essentialist thinking begins when the diagnosis is treated as the person’s complete identity, an unchanging inner nature, or a sufficient explanation for every action. Questioning that inference does not require denying the person’s distress, the usefulness of diagnosis, or the possible contribution of biology.
A systematic review of 38 qualitative studies found that psychiatric diagnoses had mixed implications for young people’s self-concept and social identity. Diagnoses could threaten and devalue the self or invite alienation and stigma, but they could also support self-understanding, legitimation, identification, and acceptance. The consequences depended on how the diagnosis was understood and managed rather than following automatically from the label itself (O’Connor et al., 2018).
The surrounding social environment also matters. Bruce Link and Jo Phelan describe stigma as a convergence of labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination under conditions of power. An essentialist interpretation can make a label feel internally caused and permanent, but institutions and relationships determine whether that interpretation becomes exclusion, diminished opportunity, or a constrained social identity (Link & Phelan, 2001).
Using Categories Without Turning Them Into Destinies
Describe Patterns Without Inventing an Inner Nature
A more careful statement identifies what was observed, where it was observed, and how much variation remains. ‘This study found an average difference under these conditions’ makes a narrower claim than ‘this group is naturally like that.’ The first statement can be revised as evidence changes. The second converts a pattern into a nature.
Before generalizing, ask how much variation exists within the category, how much overlap exists between categories, and whether the category predicts the particular property well enough to justify the inference. These questions do not forbid group-level research. They keep a group average from becoming a biography for each member.
Hold Biology and Context Together
When biological evidence matters, describe the mechanism and its limits. Distinguish genetic association from determinism, predisposition from outcome, and heritability from immutability. Ask which environments increase, suppress, or redirect the expression of a predisposition.
Respond Carefully to Generic Claims
Adults can also attend to the form of their language. In two preregistered studies involving 497 children ages four through seven, Emily Foster-Hanson, Sarah-Jane Leslie, and Marjorie Rhodes examined ways of correcting generic claims. Narrowing a statement from a kind to an individual – for example, from ‘Zarpies do this’ to ‘this Zarpie does this’ – reduced children’s tendency to treat the category as a causal explanation. Broadening a gendered statement to a superordinate group such as ‘kids’ reduced endorsement of some prescriptive gender norms (Foster-Hanson et al., 2022).
The corrections did not change every component of essentialism. They did not alter beliefs about heritability, and their effects on induction were mixed. The evidence supports a focused conclusion: wording can influence some beliefs about what a category explains and what its members should do, but a brief correction does not dissolve an entire conceptual system.
Treat the Category as a Tool Rather Than an Answer
A category can direct attention without completing an explanation. When a label seems to settle a question, ask what causal work the label is actually doing. Is it identifying an origin, a mechanism, a social expectation, a statistical pattern, or merely restating the outcome? Also ask whether an apparently inherent pattern might reflect history, convention, opportunity, or unequal conditions (Cimpian & Salomon, 2014).
This reflective pause does not ask us to abandon efficient categories. It asks us to keep them open to correction. We need categories to think, along with enough humility to remember that the map is selective and that people are always more detailed than the kinds into which they are placed.
A Few Words by Psychology Fanatic
There is comfort in believing that the world is divided into stable kinds. A hidden nature promises explanation. It tells us why a tiger behaves like a tiger, why another person seems unfamiliar, and perhaps why we ourselves have struggled or succeeded. The promise becomes dangerous when explanation closes inquiry.
Categories can hold knowledge without holding destiny. We can recognize patterns while remaining curious about variation, causes, history, and change. Psychological essentialism invites a disciplined form of humility: the feeling that something has a fixed inner nature is itself a psychological event, not the final discovery of what that thing or person must be.
Associated Concepts
- Social categorization: The broader cognitive process of sorting people into groups. Essentialism adds the belief that some of those groups reflect deep and informative kinds.
- Categorical thinking: A rigid form of classification that can obscure continua, overlap, and within-group variation.
- Entity theory: The belief that an attribute such as intelligence or personality is relatively fixed. It overlaps with essentialist intuitions about stability but addresses a different research tradition.
- Incremental theory: The belief that an attribute can develop through learning, strategy, effort, and changing conditions.
- Genetic determinism: The belief that genes directly and inevitably determine human traits or behavior. Genetic essentialism encourages this error by turning probabilistic biological influences into fixed personal or social destinies.
