Subject: Who is writing the script of your life? ๐ญ
Dear Psychology Enthusiast,
Have you ever noticed that even when you are completely alone, you aren’t really “alone” in your head?
When you make a mistake, you might “hear” a critical voice. When you succeed, you might imagine the applause of your peers. We like to think of our thoughts as private, solo missions, but the truth is far more social. Our internal life is actually a continuous, lively conversation.
This week, we are diving into the work of George Herbert Mead and his foundational theory of Social Behaviorism.

The “Lego Principle”: The Internal Script
Meadโs most profound insight was that the “Self” isn’t something we are born withโitโs something we build, brick by brick, through our interactions with others. He proposed that our identity is split into two distinct parts:
- The “I” (The Performer): This is your spontaneous, creative, and unpredictable side. Itโs the part of you that acts in the moment.
- The “Me” (The Script): This is your socialized self. Itโs the collection of rules, expectations, and “scripts” youโve learned from society.
Think of it like a stage play. The “I” is the actor on stage, but the “Me” is the script and the director telling the actor how to behave so the audience (the Generalized Other) understands the performance.
In this week’s edition, youโll discover:
- The Social Mirror: How we learn to see ourselves through the eyes of others.
- The Internal Audience: Why we “behave” for society even when no one is watching.
- Play vs. Game: The developmental stages that turn a child into a social being.
- The Architecture of Identity: Why you cannot have a “Self” without a community to reflect it.
Understanding Meadโs theory helps us realize that we aren’t just passive products of our environment. By becoming aware of our “Internal Script,” we gain the agency to start editing the lines and choosing how we want to perform in our own “Life Space.”
