One Event, Several Perspectives
A supervisor returns a report with a brief comment: “Your analysis is strong, but the recommendation needs more support.” One employee hears useful guidance. Another experiences the comment as humiliation. A colleague sees an ordinary exchange between a manager and a subordinate. Someone familiar with the organization notices how rank, prior feedback, workplace culture, and access to decision makers shape the meaning of the encounter.
The words are the same, but the experience is not. Perhaps the employee who feels humiliated has repeatedly been criticized in front of coworkers. Perhaps the supervisor treats comparable reports from favored employees more generously. Perhaps exhaustion has made a relatively neutral comment feel threatening. Each possibility places the same moment within a different explanatory frame.
Yet several perspectives do not make all accounts equally accurate. The supervisor may have intended to help. The comment may be part of a discriminatory pattern. The employee may have misunderstood an isolated remark. Several influences may operate at once.
This tension lies at the center of epistemological relativism. Human beings do not encounter the world from nowhere. We perceive, remember, interpret, and explain events from within a body, a history, a language, a culture, and a social position. At the same time, some interpretations fit the evidence better than others. The difficult question is not whether perspective influences knowledge. It is what follows from that influence.

What Is Epistemological Relativism?
Relativism is not a single doctrine. The term refers to a family of positions claiming that something can be understood or evaluated only in relation to a particular framework. Consequently, identifying a relativist claim requires answering two questions: What is considered relative, and to what is it relative?
What Is Relative to What?
In epistemological relativism, the element said to be relative may be knowledge, evidence, rational justification, standards of inquiry, or the principles used to distinguish reasonable beliefs from unreasonable ones. Stronger forms extend this dependence to truth itself. These claims should not be treated as interchangeable. Arguing that standards of justification vary among communities is not necessarily the same as claiming that contradictory factual statements can both be true.
The framework may be an individual perspective, culture, language, conceptual scheme, scientific paradigm, historical period, intellectual tradition, or epistemic community. A belief might therefore be considered justified according to the accepted standards of one community but unjustified according to the standards of another.
For example, a scientific community determines which methods are acceptable, which observations count as relevant evidence, and how much support a conclusion requires. These standards develop within a history of research, training, instruments, and shared assumptions. Recognizing this framework does not establish that scientific conclusions are merely matters of preference. It means that evidence is gathered and evaluated through established human practices rather than from a completely framework-free position.
The strength of a relativist position depends partly on how much it places within the framework. A limited position may hold that standards of evidence vary according to the subject, purpose, or historical setting. A stronger position may argue that no framework-independent standard exists for comparing incompatible systems of knowledge. The first acknowledges contextual variation. The second raises the more radical possibility that competing frameworks cannot be evaluated from common ground (Baghramian & Carter, 2015; Krausz, 2010).
Descriptive, Normative, Local, and Global Relativism
A crucial distinction separates descriptive variation from normative epistemological relativism. Descriptively, people from different cultures, professions, historical periods, and social positions often hold different beliefs. Their concepts, interests, methods, and experiences help explain those differences.
Normative relativism goes further. It proposes that the standards used to justify or evaluate beliefs are themselves relative to a framework. A belief may therefore satisfy the accepted standards of one community while failing to satisfy those of another.
The first claim is psychological, sociological, or historical. The second is philosophical. Evidence that people form beliefs under different conditions does not establish that their beliefs are equally reasonable. A person’s history may explain why a particular conclusion feels convincing without demonstrating that the conclusion is well supported. Explaining the origin of a belief is not the same as establishing its truth or justification.
Relativist positions also differ in scope. Local relativism confines relativity to a particular domain, practice, or type of judgment. Someone might argue that standards of taste depend on an assessor, that methods of inquiry vary among disciplines, or that a knowledge claim must be evaluated within a specific practical context. This position leaves room for nonrelative standards in other domains.
Global relativism makes the broader claim that all truth, knowledge, rationality, or justification is relative to a framework. This stronger position faces a self-referential difficulty. If the statement “all truth is relative” is itself only true within one framework, it provides no framework-independent reason for others to accept it. If it is universally true, it appears to exempt itself from the relativism it declares (Baghramian & Carter, 2015).
Distinguishing descriptive from normative relativism—and local from global relativism—prevents several different ideas from being collapsed into the assertion that “everyone has their own truth.” Human knowing may be situated, context-sensitive, and fallible without making every interpretation equally justified.
Relativism and Its Neighbors
Epistemological relativism overlaps with several concepts that recognize the influence of perspective, context, and human interpretation. These neighboring positions do not necessarily make the stronger relativist claim that truth or justification changes with every framework. Distinguishing them prevents ordinary variations in experience and understanding from being mistaken for evidence that all knowledge is relative.
Subjectivity, Perspectivism, and Contextualism
Subjectivity refers to the first-person character of experience. Pain, fear, attraction, shame, and meaning are experienced by a particular person from within that person’s body and history. Damasio describes consciousness as personal and perspectival: perceptions and thoughts occur from our position, belong to us, and carry possibilities for our action.
Subjectivity does not imply that the external world is created entirely by the person experiencing it. Two people can experience the same rainstorm differently while both remain answerable to whether rain is falling. Their emotional reactions, memories, and personal meanings may differ even when they are responding to the same external event.
Perspectivism holds that every act of knowing occurs from a standpoint. A physicist, carpenter, art historian, and economist may describe the same table in different terms. One may examine its material composition, another its construction, another its aesthetic significance, and another its economic value. These accounts need not contradict one another because they answer different questions and reveal different features of the same object.
Multiple perspectives can therefore be legitimate without being identical in purpose or equally successful at every task. Recognizing the value of perspective does not require concluding that reality changes whenever the observer changes (Damasio, 1999; von Bertalanffy, 2015).
Contextualism proposes that the standards governing whether someone can properly be said to know something may change with the conversational or practical context. In an ordinary situation, briefly checking that a door is locked may be sufficient to say, “I know the door is locked.” If an unlocked door would create a serious danger, the same person may require a more careful inspection before making the same knowledge claim.
The underlying condition of the door does not change with the speaker’s context. What changes is the level of assurance required before claiming knowledge. Contextualism therefore recognizes variable standards without necessarily claiming that truth itself is relative (Baghramian & Carter, 2015).
Subjectivity, perspectivism, and contextualism all acknowledge limits or conditions on human knowing. None, by itself, establishes that incompatible beliefs are equally justified.
Constructivism, Pluralism, and Skepticism
Constructivism emphasizes that people actively organize experience. Categories, memories, narratives, and explanatory models do not enter the mind as untouched copies of the world. People interpret new information through previous learning, language, expectations, and existing mental structures.
Construction, however, does not necessarily mean invention without constraint. A map is constructed, but the landscape still determines whether the map provides reliable guidance. A psychological explanation is constructed from observations, reports, theories, and interpretations, but it remains accountable to behavior, evidence, and consequences. Constructivism may therefore describe how knowledge is formed without requiring the conclusion that reality is whatever a person constructs it to be.
Pluralism allows more than one theory, method, or model to provide legitimate knowledge about a complex phenomenon. Biological, psychological, interpersonal, and social explanations of depression may identify different contributing processes. These explanations can coexist because they operate at different levels and answer different questions.
Pluralism does not mean that every explanation is adequate. Multiple models may contribute useful knowledge while still differing in evidentiary support, explanatory reach, predictive success, and practical value. Allowing several perspectives is not the same as assigning equal validity to every conceivable account.
Skepticism questions whether knowledge is possible or whether a belief has been justified sufficiently to count as knowledge. A skeptic may doubt that certainty can be achieved, question the reliability of perception, or challenge whether the available evidence supports a conclusion.
Relativism ordinarily takes a different path. Instead of denying that knowledge is possible, it locates knowledge or justification within a framework. The skeptic asks whether we truly know. The relativist asks whether what counts as knowing depends on the standards of a person, culture, community, or conceptual system.
These distinctions create an important boundary around epistemological relativism. Knowledge may be subjective in experience, perspectival in approach, contextual in its standards, constructed through cognitive activity, plural in its explanations, or uncertain under skeptical examination. None of these qualities, by itself, demonstrates that truth is relative or that every interpretation deserves equal confidence.
Why Relativism Feels Psychologically Plausible
Selective Consciousness and Learned Perception
Research on perception, attention, memory, and consciousness indicates that human beings do not function as passive recording devices. Conscious awareness is selective and organized around an organism’s position, goals, and possible actions. Conscious awareness is selective and tied to an organism’s position, goals, and possible actions. This selectivity is adaptive, but what has been selected can feel like the whole scene rather than one organized portion of it.
Bertalanffy illustrates learned perception with a microscope slide. A novice sees shapes and colors. A trained histologist sees cells, tissues, and possible disease. A cytochemist and pathologist attend to different features because training directs attention toward different questions. The sensory display has not become a freely invented object. Learned concepts make genuine structures available for recognition and communication (Damasio, 1999; von Bertalanffy, 2015).
Reconstructive Memory and Emotional Relevance
Memory adds another layer of mediation. Remembering is not the replay of a fixed recording. Siegel describes memory as an active reconstruction shaped by fragments of earlier experience, present emotion, current context, questioning, and expectations (Siegel, 2012). Confidence does not guarantee accuracy. Retrieval can modify later storage; actual events can be forgotten; and events that never occurred can sometimes be remembered with conviction.
Emotion is not merely an interruption of thought. Damasio places bodily and emotional signals within decision-making. Somatic markers can direct attention toward anticipated losses or gains, often before deliberate analysis (Damasio, 1994). Emotion may improve judgment by emphasizing danger or value. It may also narrow judgment when fear, desire, or identity threat gives disproportionate weight to selected evidence. This process is closely related to cognitive appraisal, through which personal concerns, beliefs, and perceived coping resources help determine what an event means to the individual (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).
Feeling strongly about an interpretation tells us that the issue carries personal significance. It does not independently establish that the interpretation is correct.
From Individual Perspectives to Shared Frameworks
Human beings understand complicated realities through models. A model selects relationships, organizes information, and makes some questions easier to ask. This selection is necessary; a model containing every feature of a phenomenon would cease to function as a model. Difficulty begins when we forget what has been left out.
Conceptual Schemes, Scientific Paradigms, and Models
Bertalanffy resists “nothing-but” explanations that reduce a complex phenomenon to particles, genes, conditioning, drives, or social power. Different models can capture different structural features of reality. They still vary in precision, scope, explanatory success, and predictive value. A model can be partial without being arbitrary (von Bertalanffy, 2015).
Kuhn’s account of paradigms challenged the idea that science advances only through the steady addition of neutral facts. Scientific communities work within traditions that influence which problems seem important, which methods are legitimate, and what counts as an acceptable solution. This does not make one paradigm as good as another. A new framework may explain more phenomena, resolve anomalies, produce better predictions, or support more effective interventions (Kuhn, 2012).
Davidson challenges the idea of wholly untranslatable conceptual worlds. To interpret another person as holding beliefs at all, we must identify considerable overlap in language, behavior, objects, and shared truths. Meaningful disagreement requires some shared ground (Davidson, 1974).
If knowledge is situated, objectivity need not mean emptying the observer of all history, language, values, and assumptions. Longino offers a more productive view: objectivity grows through public standards, criticism, genuine uptake of dissent, and participation by differently situated investigators. Objectivity is not a private state of perfect neutrality. It is an achievement of inquiry (Longino, 1990).
Culture, Standpoint, and Power
Charles Horton Cooley observed that people rarely notice assumptions shared by everyone around them. Local customs, accents, class attitudes, and inherited beliefs become difficult to see precisely because they are familiar. Competing ideas provide contrast. Encountering another social world can make what once seemed natural visible as an assumption (Cooley, 1922).
Culture influences which distinctions seem important, which explanations are available, and which experiences are easily communicated. Bertalanffy distinguishes raw sensory capacity from culturally organized apperception. Cooley similarly observes that people often experience the outlook surrounding them as the natural outlook until contrast makes its assumptions visible.
A social position may provide access to experiences overlooked by those in more privileged positions. An employee dependent on unpredictable scheduling may understand its practical effects better than an executive who sees only staffing statistics. A patient may possess knowledge of symptoms that laboratory results cannot replace. Social location does not guarantee an accurate explanation, but excluding a standpoint can remove relevant evidence (Fricker, 2009; Longino, 1990).
Fricker’s concept of epistemic injustice adds the power dimension. Testimonial injustice occurs when prejudice causes a listener to assign less credibility than a speaker deserves. Hermeneutical injustice arises when gaps in shared interpretive resources make important experiences difficult to understand or communicate. Correcting these wrongs does not make identity automatic proof. It creates fairer conditions for testimony to be heard and investigated (Fricker, 2009).
Diversity strengthens inquiry when different perspectives can expose hidden assumptions and when criticism changes what the community accepts. Merely allowing dissent to be spoken while ensuring it has no effect does not create epistemic openness (Longino, 1990).
Epistemic Trust: How We Decide Whom to Believe
Most human knowledge is not acquired through direct observation. We depend on parents, teachers, clinicians, scientists, journalists, historians, institutions, and other specialists to tell us about events and processes we cannot personally investigate. Even experts rely on the testimony and work of other experts. No individual can independently reproduce every scientific experiment, inspect every medical finding, or verify every historical record relevant to an informed life.
This dependence creates a central epistemological problem. Knowing is not only a matter of evaluating evidence. It also involves deciding which people, practices, and institutions deserve our trust.
John Hardwig refers to this condition as epistemic dependence. Much of what a person is justified in believing depends on the knowledge, competence, and honesty of others. Reliance on authority is therefore not necessarily a failure of independent thought. In complex fields, refusing all intellectual dependence would leave us with less knowledge rather than greater objectivity. The challenge is distinguishing responsible reliance on expertise from uncritical acceptance of authority (Hardwig, 1985).
Psychologically, people rarely evaluate every communicated claim through a complete examination of the evidence. We use cues. We consider whether the speaker appears knowledgeable, confident, honest, familiar, socially respected, or aligned with people we already trust. We may also examine whether the message is coherent, plausible, consistent with previous knowledge, and supported by other sources.
These shortcuts are necessary, but they are imperfect. Confidence can be mistaken for competence. Familiarity can feel like truth. Group loyalty can increase the credibility of agreeable voices while making opposing experts appear dishonest or biased. Institutional prestige may conceal error, while prejudice may cause a knowledgeable speaker to receive less credibility than the person deserves (Sperber et al., 2010).
Dan Sperber and his colleagues describe the collection of cognitive processes used to evaluate communicated information as epistemic vigilance. Human beings benefit enormously from social learning, but openness to communication also creates vulnerability to misinformation, manipulation, and deception. Epistemic vigilance helps manage this risk by directing attention toward both the content of a message and the reliability of its source (Sperber et al., 2010).
Healthy epistemic vigilance is not the same as generalized distrust. Generalized distrust may also shift reliance toward sources whose appeal rests largely on their opposition to established authorities.
Epistemic trust is better understood as calibrated rather than absolute. A source may be trustworthy within one area of expertise but unreliable outside it. A credible institution may still make mistakes. A person with direct experience may provide essential evidence without possessing a complete explanation of its causes. Trust can therefore be substantial without becoming unconditional.
Responsible judgment considers several questions:
- Does the source possess relevant expertise?
- Is the claim within that expertise?
- Is the source transparent about evidence, methods, and uncertainty?
- Do independent sources reach similar conclusions?
- Are meaningful criticism and correction possible?
- Does the source revise its position when better evidence becomes available?
- Are financial, political, personal, or group interests influencing the presentation?
These questions do not eliminate dependence on others. They make that dependence more reflective. We do not become independent knowers by refusing testimony. We become more responsible knowers by learning when trust is warranted, when additional verification is necessary, and when confidence should remain provisional.
The Psychology of Knowing
People differ not only in what they believe but in what they believe knowledge to be. Some treat knowledge as certain answers delivered by trusted authorities. Others discover that authorities disagree and conclude that every answer is merely opinion. More reflective thinkers recognize genuine uncertainty while still evaluating evidence and reasoning.
From Certainty to Reflective Judgment
King and Kitchener’s Reflective Judgment Model describes movement from prereflective certainty through quasi-reflective recognition of uncertainty toward judgments that coordinate claims with evidence. “Everyone has an opinion” may be an advance over unexamined authority because it recognizes perspective. It remains incomplete when it cannot explain why one interpretation deserves greater confidence than another (King & Kitchener, 1994).
Hofer and Pintrich organize personal epistemology around beliefs concerning the certainty, simplicity, source, and justification of knowledge. These beliefs influence how people learn, respond to disagreement, and decide whether evidence is sufficient (Hofer & Pintrich, 1997).
Siegel’s account of metacognition supplies a practical bridge. Metacognition includes the capacity to think about thinking, recognize representational diversity, and distinguish appearance from reality. It does not remove perspective; it allows perspective to become an object of reflection. Instead of simply thinking, “This is what happened,” a person can notice, “I am interpreting what happened through a particular expectation” (Siegel, 2012).
Chinn, Buckland, and Samarapungavan broaden this account by including epistemic aims and values, the structure and sources of knowledge, epistemic virtues and vices, and the reliability of the processes used to achieve epistemic goals (Chinn et al., 2011).
Intelligence, Rationality, and Intellectual Humility
High intelligence does not guarantee sound judgment. Analytical ability can help test a belief, but it can also generate elaborate defenses for a preferred conclusion. Stanovich, West, and Toplak distinguish conventional intelligence from rational thinking competencies such as probabilistic reasoning, scientific reasoning, resistance to biased information processing, and willingness to question an intuitive response (Stanovich et al., 2016).
Intellectual humility offers a constructive response. Leary and colleagues center the concept on recognizing that one’s beliefs may be wrong. Intellectual humility does not mean treating every claim as equally plausible. A person can say, “The evidence strongly supports this conclusion, and I remain willing to revise it if better evidence emerges.” Confidence comes from the evidence; humility comes from recognizing that evidence and interpretation remain corrigible (Leary et al., 2017).
Without standards, humility deteriorates into drift. Without humility, standards harden into dogma.
Emotion, Identity, and Motivated Reasoning
People evaluate ideas for more than accuracy. Beliefs can protect identity, belonging, status, innocence, hope, or control. A conclusion may be attractive because it is true; it may also be attractive because it permits us to remain the person we wish to be.
Kunda’s review proposes that motivation influences which memories, beliefs, and reasoning strategies become available. Accuracy goals encourage appropriate strategies; directional goals encourage strategies more likely to produce a desired conclusion, while remaining constrained by what can be made to appear reasonable. Two people may therefore analyze the same evidence sincerely while applying different scrutiny (Kunda, 1990).
General instructions to “be objective” may be less useful than a concrete strategy. Lord, Lepper, and Preston found that considering the opposite reduced biased assimilation and biased hypothesis testing more effectively than vague instructions to be fair. Hirt and Markman further showed why the alternative must be plausible. A credible alternative can weaken the feeling that the first explanation was inevitable; an implausible alternative may strengthen the original belief (Lord et al., 1984; Hirt & Markman, 1995).
The goal is not to assume the opposite is true. It is to prevent the first interpretation from winning merely because it arrived first.
What Epistemological Relativism Clarifies—and Where It Fails
What Epistemological Relativism Gets Right
- There is no psychologically unmediated view: perception, attention, memory, emotion, language, and representation participate in knowing.
- Concepts shape observation by influencing what counts as relevant evidence and which patterns become visible.
- Models are selective; a useful explanation can be partial without being arbitrary.
- Knowledge has a social history: institutions and power influence what is studied and who is recognized as a knower.
- Disagreement can reveal premises that had disappeared into familiarity.
- Excluded perspectives may contribute evidence unavailable within a dominant framework.
The relativist challenge performs an important service when it asks confident knowers to account for the standpoint, concepts, methods, and social conditions through which confidence was produced. Anti-relativism becomes unconvincing when it imagines knowledge as a pure reflection untouched by organisms, histories, instruments, concepts, or interests.
Where Relativism Goes Too Far
A person’s cultural and psychological history may explain why a belief feels self-evident. That explanation does not determine whether the belief fits the evidence. Understanding a belief sympathetically and evaluating it critically are different tasks. Both can be necessary.
Different frameworks may illuminate different aspects of a phenomenon, but framework dependence does not establish equal validity. Different frameworks may illuminate different dimensions of experience, but frameworks making competing factual or causal claims can still be compared. Two explanations of an illness are not equally well supported when one predicts disease progression, guides effective treatment, and survives disconfirming tests while the other does not. A poem may express the experience of illness without functioning as a medical explanation. The appropriate standard depends on the question, but standards do not disappear.
The statement “all truth is relative” seems to present itself as a truth applying beyond one framework. If it is only true within the speaker’s framework, outsiders have no reason to accept it. If it is universally true, at least one truth is not relative in the proposed sense. This challenges global relativism without refuting every local or contextual form (Baghramian & Carter, 2015).
Radical incommensurability also threatens understanding. If two schemes shared no standards, objects, beliefs, or translatable terms, we could not identify them as disagreeing about the same world. Translation may be difficult without being impossible (Davidson, 1974).
Finally, complexity does not require false balance. Considering alternatives is a method of inquiry, not an obligation to assign equal probability. A claim supported by repeated observation, independent evidence, credible mechanism, prediction, and serious criticism should receive more confidence than a claim supported by preference or repetition.
Beyond Absolutism and “Anything Goes”
This middle position reflects a form of situated fallibilism: knowledge remains possible and capable of improvement even though human knowers are limited, historically situated, and open to error. The challenge is to acknowledge the influence of perspective without treating reality as infinitely flexible or abandoning standards for evaluating competing claims.
The Perspective–Constraint–Correction Model
The Perspective–Constraint–Correction Model is a Psychology Fanatic synthesis for understanding how knowledge can be situated without becoming arbitrary. It is not presented as an established psychological theory. Instead, it organizes several philosophical and psychological insights into a practical account of how people form, evaluate, and revise knowledge.
The model draws together research and theory concerning perspectival consciousness, conceptual models, social objectivity, metacognition, alternative explanations, and revisable clinical formulation (Damasio, 1999; von Bertalanffy, 2015; Longino, 1990; Siegel, 2012; Hirt & Markman, 1995; Persons, 2008).
The model begins with the recognition that no person possesses a view from nowhere. It then adds two necessary qualifications: reality places limits on interpretation, and disciplined practices can improve our understanding.
Perspective. Biology, attention, emotion, memory, language, culture, personal history, and social position influence what becomes visible and meaningful. People do not passively receive an untouched copy of the world. They notice selected details, organize them through learned concepts, assign significance through appraisal, and interpret them within existing frameworks.
Perspective helps explain why sincere people can examine the same event and reach different conclusions. They may possess different information, attend to different features, apply different concepts, or experience different personal consequences. Acknowledging these influences encourages humility because it reminds us that every interpretation is formed from a limited position.
Perspective, however, does not establish that every conclusion is equally accurate.
Constraint. Reality is not infinitely accommodating. Predictions succeed or fail. Interventions produce measurable outcomes. Explanations conflict with records, testimony, or repeated observation. Environments resist models that do not correspond sufficiently with their structure.
A person may interpret critical feedback as evidence of personal hostility, but the broader pattern may not support that conclusion. A treatment may fit a compelling theory but repeatedly fail to improve the condition it was designed to address. A scientific model may organize existing observations while producing inaccurate predictions. In each case, consequences and evidence place pressure on the preferred interpretation.
Constraint does not give human beings direct, perfect access to reality. Evidence must still be selected, measured, and interpreted. It does mean that perspectives encounter conditions they did not freely create. Some explanations allow more successful prediction, coordination, and action than others.
Correction. Because knowledge is perspectival and fallible, improvement depends on practices that expose interpretations to examination. These include metacognition, plausible alternative explanations, corroborating evidence, diverse testimony, transparent methods, public standards, informed criticism, and willingness to revise.
Correction is not a final escape from perspective. New evidence is also interpreted, critics also bring assumptions of their own, and revised models remain incomplete. Nevertheless, inquiry can become more reliable when blind spots are exposed, predictions are tested, excluded evidence is considered, and conclusions change in response to credible challenges.
Correction helps explain how situated knowers can improve their understanding without claiming perfect neutrality.
Together, the model provides a middle position between rigid absolutism and unrestricted relativism:
Perspective explains why people disagree. Constraint explains why every interpretation is not equally successful. Correction explains how situated knowers can improve their understanding.
The goal is not certainty untouched by human perspective. It is knowledge that remains responsive to evidence, consequences, alternative viewpoints, and correction.
A Clinical Analogy: Revisable Formulation
Cognitive-behavioral case formulation demonstrates the Perspective–Constraint–Correction Model in practice. A formulation is developed from a particular perspective, constrained by evidence from the client’s life, and corrected as new information and treatment outcomes become available.
Perspective enters through the client’s reported experience, personal history, culture, emotional responses, and understanding of the problem. The clinician also contributes professional training, theoretical assumptions, observations, and prior experience. Neither participant approaches the problem from a perspective-free position.
Constraint comes from the evidence the formulation must explain. The proposed account should fit the client’s reported experience, behavior, recurring patterns, relationships, and circumstances. It should also generate useful expectations about what precipitates or maintains the problem. A compelling interpretation becomes less credible when it repeatedly conflicts with the client’s experience or fails to guide effective treatment.
Correction occurs as the clinician and client gather information, test predictions, observe treatment responses, and revise the formulation. The formulation remains useful because it is coherent enough to guide action and provisional enough to change.
This is neither absolutism nor “anything goes.” The clinician does not possess a final and perfectly objective explanation, but the formulation remains answerable to evidence, consequences, collaboration, and revision (Persons, 2008).
A Practical Discipline of Revisable Conviction
The Perspective–Constraint–Correction Model can also guide everyday judgment. The following practices help identify the perspective shaping an interpretation, test that interpretation against meaningful constraints, and create opportunities for correction.
- Separate observation from interpretation. “The supervisor said my recommendation needed more support” is an observation. “The supervisor wants me to fail” is an interpretation requiring additional evidence.
- Identify the frame. Name the expectations, roles, concepts, and past experiences organizing the first explanation. Naming a frame does not discredit it; it reveals what it highlights and may overlook.
- Calibrate confidence. Distinguish what is observed, reasonably inferred, and uncertain. State what would change the conclusion.
- Generate plausible alternatives. Construct at least one competing explanation that fits enough evidence to create a real test. An absurd alternative does not challenge the preferred account.
- Compare explanatory performance. Ask which account explains more evidence, requires fewer unsupported assumptions, identifies a credible mechanism, predicts outcomes, and survives informed criticism.
- Invite criticism and track revision. Seek disagreement from people with relevant knowledge or experience, especially perspectives the original frame tends to exclude. Openness becomes meaningful when criticism can alter belief.
These practices do not provide a view from nowhere. They help us become less confined by the view from where we currently stand. The aim is revisable conviction: a conclusion firm enough to guide action and humble enough to change.
A Few Words by Psychology Fanatic
Perspective is unavoidable. Captivity to perspective is not.
We enter the world through a particular body, family, language, culture, and moment in history. These conditions give us the concepts through which experience first becomes intelligible. They also create blind spots. We mistake the familiar for the natural, the emotionally persuasive for the factual, and the explanation available to us for the only explanation that could exist.
Relativism performs an important service when it disturbs this certainty. It reminds us that intelligent people can inherit unexamined assumptions, that respected institutions can organize ignorance, and that a person dismissed as biased may possess evidence excluded from the dominant account.
But the correction can travel too far. Recognizing that all knowing is situated does not require surrendering judgment. Evidence still constrains. Predictions succeed or fail. Interventions help or harm. Explanations survive criticism or collapse beneath it. Some voices have been unfairly ignored, and some claims are poorly supported. These truths can coexist.
Mature knowing combines humility with discrimination. We can listen without assuming agreement, remain confident without claiming infallibility, and revise a conclusion without treating its earlier form as worthless.
Objectivity is not purity from perspective. It is the disciplined work of exposing perspective to evidence, alternatives, criticism, and correction. Understanding the limits of human knowledge need not lead us to abandon truth. It can replace the fantasy of perfect certainty with the more demanding practice of becoming less wrong.
The employee and supervisor from the opening example may never achieve a perfectly neutral account of their exchange. They can, however, compare what was said, consider the history surrounding it, examine whether similar interactions form a pattern, and listen for information their first interpretations excluded. Their perspectives remain situated, but through evidence, dialogue, and revision, they may arrive at an understanding that neither could reach alone.

- Epistemic Trust: The capacity to judge communicated knowledge as sufficiently reliable, relevant, and safe to learn from.
- Epistemic Cognition: Beliefs and processes concerning the nature, sources, certainty, limits, and justification of knowledge.
- Epistemic Injustice: Unfairly harming someone in their capacity as a knower, including credibility prejudice and gaps in shared interpretive resources.
