Maintaining good physical health and fitness not only contributes to a healthy body but also plays a critical role in psychological wellness. The interconnectedness of physical and mental well-being is undeniable, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on psychological wellness are extensive.

Many illnesses and diseases are unavoidable. We have some control over our lives but not total control. When suffering from illness and disease, we can engage in many activities, drawing on different resources to ameliorate the pain. However, many illnesses and diseases are consequences of life choices. We can add activities to our lives that improve our health, lengthen our lives, and add to our overall well being. I refer to these as the wellness basics.

We can’t ignore our bodies and expect to enjoy optimal mental health. If we want to overcome an addiction, work on the wellness basics. If you want to help improve moods, work on the wellness basics. Ignore your physical health and you ultimately impact your overall sense of well-being as well.

Psychological wellness encompasses the state of being cognitively, emotionally, and socially balanced. It involves effectively coping with life’s challenges, forming fulfilling relationships, and maintaining a positive sense of self. This state of wellbeing allows individuals to function optimally and contribute to their communities.

The Benefits of Regular Exercise and a Healthy Lifestyle

Richard J. Davidson and Sharon Begley wrote:

“A sense of well-being, the experience of joy, and enduring happiness are associated with eating a more healthful diet, exercising regularly, and sleeping better. All of these enhance health and the ability to fight off disease and decline, both physical and mental” (Davidson & Begley, 2012).

Positive emotions impact our health, and our health impacts our emotions. Whole person wellness requires that we work on both our physical and mental wellness.

Our health and fitness impacts our overall wellbeing in many ways.

Regular physical activity provides many health benefits beyond reducing stress. In addition to stimulating the production of endorphins, exercise can also contribute to improved sleep, increased energy levels, and enhanced cognitive function. Furthermore, maintaining an active lifestyle can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The combination of these physical health benefits and the positive impact on mental well-being makes regular exercise a crucial component of a comprehensive approach to maintaining overall wellness.

It requires fighting against comfortable trajectories. Quickly, after the initial spark of energy, our motivation wanes and we relapse to old habits. Yet, if we really desire to be well, change is possible.
